Keyword Density - Definition

Keyword density, also known as keyword frequency, refers to the number of times a particular keyword has been used on a web page compared to its total word count. The formula to calculate keyword density for a web page is:

(The number of times a keyword appears / Total Word Count of the Page)*100

For example, if you have used a keyword 20 times on a website page that contains a total of 2000 words, the keyword density here would be 1%. Similarly, if the keyword appears 40 times, the keyword density would be 2%, and so on. 

Why is Keyword Density so Important?

Using relevant keywords in your website page content is important as keywords drive searches. You can optimize your website content for search engines only by doing proper research about relevant keywords and incorporating them into your content. While advanced tools by Google take several other factors into account, ensuring a decent keyword density in your website content is still important.

What is an ideal Keyword Density?

Although there is no clear definition for an ideal keyword density, experts recommend avoiding keyword stuffing. The relevant keywords should be there in your website content, but you don’t need to overuse them. Usually, a keyword density of 1% to 2% is considered good. 

Your content may even perform well if the keyword density is slightly higher or lower than this. Many content pages achieve top rankings even with keyword density as low as 0.5%. Therefore, it is important to focus on the relevancy of your page content along with the usage of keywords.
